Holistic midwifery care can improve families health
Oct 31, 2019
Poverty impacts families health in Counties Manukau region: holistic midwifery care can improve families health. I am a self-employed midwife who has worked in Otara, Mangere, Manurewa and Papakura for 24 years. My passion is empowering women to improve their health and that of their infants and children. I endeavour to do this by providing holistic midwifery care throughout pregnancy, birth and in the first six weeks following the birth. Counties Manukau Health has the highest stillbirth, neonatal deaths and babies born with ‘small for gestational age’ – (baby is too small to be robust and healthy) in NZ. This region also has a large number of pregnant women who access maternity care /midwifery care late in their pregnancy’s and it is known worldwide that this late care is a major contributing factor to these poor and sad outcomes. Within my work as a midwife I have looked at the maternity health services over these years and found poverty, low health literacy and/or some socio-cultural circumstances are obstacles to wellness. With acknowledgement and some effort the women of this region could be empowered to access health services in a more timely manner, improving their health and that of their families. It is well known that the mother, the matriarch of a family is the most influential person to the health practises within her family. By influencing healthy lifestyle practices and overcoming issues of poverty a stronger healthier family is possible. With health comes the ability to learn, take up educational opportunities and being marginalised by poverty becomes a past life. |

INTERPLAST and Ambassadorial Scholar
Nov 28, 2019
Shefali Mehta, District 9920 Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship Chair, is proud to announce that the Rotary Club of Auckland will be hosting Ambassadorial Scholar Connor Lind from July 2019 to November 2020.
Connor is from Tyler, Texas, in District 5830 which covers a tri-state area of north-eastern Texas, south-eastern Oklahoma and south-western Arkansas. District 5830 refers to itself as the “Action District”. Connor was 2018-2019 District 5830 Global Scholar. Photo showsConnor Lind and Shefali Mehta.
Connor graduated with a Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering degree from Mississippi State University. He chose this field to use his skills in creativity, technology and problem solving to help those less fortunate regain their independence from disease or trauma. This passion continues with his decision to attend the University of Auckland where he will study for a degree of Master in Mechanical Engineering. The focus of this study will be biotechnology. The specific areas are prosthetics, exoskeletons and rehabilitation devices. The knowledge and experience gained will allow Connor to create devices which assist people suffering from diseases such as cerebral palsy and diabetes. It will also help them recover from other illnesses or physical trauma which limits their confidence, independence and daily activities. Connor’s research will be under the supervision of a professor specialising in rehabilitation and treatment.
Connor says: “It is my understanding, when considering candidates for the Rotary Club Global Grant; one of the requirements is how the candidate will ultimately use their education toward the treatment of diseases as well as the training of individuals to minimize the negative effects of diseases. This aligns with my goal to ultimately create devices which would treat those impacted with acute and chronic illnesses as well as educate the population on how these devices can be utilized to improve their quality of life. This has always been my goal and will continue to be my goal well after I have completed my formal education.”

Apr 02, 2020 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Hi Everybody. This week we are going to have our first online club meeting. It will be an informal meting for a catch-up and to find out how everyone is doing a week into lockdown. Below are the details for the meeting which includes a URL to click on. If you don’t already have the Zoom app, you will be prompted to download it. If you have a webcam (all laptops will but not necessarily desktop PCs) and microphone on your computer, make sure that these are on and tested before clicking on the URL. If you don’t have a microphone, you can join the audio using a phone to one of the local numbers below. I suggest that those of you who haven't used Zoom before try to connect a bit earlier so that you can get everything ready before the meeting starts. It also works a lot better if you have headphones and, if possible, a microphone - the sound quality is much better and you don't get any interference from background noise.
