The Rotary spirit of Service Above Self is currently shining brightly across District 9920 (Auckland) as local clubs unite in a powerful demonstration of support for a young boy from Beachlands, on the Pohutukawa Coast.

He was recently accepted into a free clinical trial in Texas, USA, after his cancer returned. While the medical treatment itself is free, the associated costs—including specialized airfares, accommodation, and living expenses for Hugo and his family during the trial—are significant, estimated at $500,000 NZD.

Community and Rotary Unite

Family and friends swiftly initiated an intensive fundraising campaign. A Givealittle page was established and has rapidly garnered overwhelming support from the wider community, raising over $400,000.

Seeing the immense need, the Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast acted as a catalyst, made an initial donation of $3,000 and reached out to neighbouring clubs for assistance. The response was immediate and inspiring.

Through collaborative action, the Rotary Clubs across South and East Auckland, within RCG4 and 5, collectively raised a further $9,000.

Leveraging the Harold Thomas Rotary Trust

The collective club contributions were then amplified through a remarkable partnership with the Harold Thomas Rotary Trust. The Trust is specifically dedicated to assisting children with medical needs, aiming to improve their health outcomes.

A key feature of the Trust is its requirement for a dollar-for-dollar match from supporting Rotary Clubs. Recognising the urgency and importance of Hugo's treatment, the Harold Thomas Rotary Trust agreed to match the $12,000 raised by the local clubs with an additional $12,000.

  • Total Club Donations: $12,000
  • Harold Thomas Rotary Trust Match: $12,000
  • Total Rotary Contribution to the Campaign: $24,000

This coordinated effort demonstrates the immense financial power Rotary can harness when working together for a common humanitarian goal.

Global Connections for Local Support

The power of Rotary extends beyond financial aid. As he and his family prepare for their time in Texas, the global Rotary network ensures they will not be alone. Connections are being established with Rotary Clubs in Texas who will be able to offer essential local support, assistance, and fellowship to the family while they focus on Hugo’s treatment and recovery.

The entire District 9920 offers its best wishes him and his family for a successful clinical trial and a speedy return home. Their story is a powerful reminder of how Rotary clubs, working side-by-side, can create life-changing opportunities and embody the core values of our organisation.
