Rotary Club of Papakura

17th February 2021, Issue 28

Back to Level 2
Meeting 18th February

We have confirmed that the caterers will be on deck at the RSA tomorrow night - it is their last night.

We are at Alert Level 2 which means seated and served dinner so the caterers need to know how many will be coming to the meeting.

Check your email from Sue. Can you all please respond ASAP with a Registration or Decline so that President-elect Sue can notify the caterers by midday tomorrow.

We do have a speaker - The life and times of John Fothergill.

From the President's Desk
Greetings Fellow Rotarians
The TV News Presenter informed me tonight that it was now 1 year since the first case of Covid-19 was detected in New Zealand.
So much for those of us, that thought the whole thing would be over in a couple of months!
I am extremely proud of the way the Rotary Club of Papakura has handled the last 12 months. We have kept the club active and helped the community with a number of projects and situations.
Due to ‘you know what’ we will be running a zoom meeting this Thursday evening. John F will be sending out details soon.
My thanks to PE Sue for keeping things ticking over while I was away restocking the freezer with fish for the next 12 months.
I am very disappointed with the latest Level 3 lockdown. I had spent last Saturday playing some very good bowls in the qualifying rounds of the Club 4’s competition, and qualified, only to have the Post Section play on Sunday cancelled!!!.
I can tell you one thing – a ‘Boomer’ did not cause this latest lockdown.
Catch you online Thursday.
President Allan
Sue President Elect
Despite the Level 2 lockdown, we had a good turnout to hear John’s “Life & Times”.  It is not only entertaining but interesting to hear the stories behind our club members, one I look forward to continuing in my year as President.  John, thank you for sharing your story from where you grew up to where you are now.
As Nid & Tan left the RSA on Sunday, we enjoyed our last meal cooked & served by the couple who have provided consistently great food.   George thanked them on behalf of Rotary after we had enjoyed a roast meal (plated due to Level 2) & dessert.
Mike encouraged all members to actively source likely candidates for the upcoming RYLA (3rd – 10th July).   He has posted it on the Papakura Rotary Facebook page so please share it and if you know any potential applicants please contact Mike or Martin with their details.
As the new caterers will not be starting at the RSA until our 4th March, we are having a fellowship night at Tipparost Thai Restaurant (6pm – 8pm).   President Alan has returned from a well-deserved holiday – there will be a Directors meeting the week, venue & time to be confirmed.

Stay safe & take care, Sue
Support for Hayley James
Club members will remember Hayley who was a scholarship recipient last year.  She had left a very difficult family situation and was living independently.  She spoke back in early December about her first year at University where she had been studying Law and Commerce.  She passed all her papers with excellent grades and gained entry to Law School.  However, she has decided that Law is not for her but will continue with Commerce.
Hayley is working over the summer holidays at a variety of low paid jobs in order to finance her University and accommodation costs, which will be considerable.
Both times after she has spoken, several club members have approached me suggesting that the club continues to support Hayley financially.  I am recommending to Directors that we continue to give some support to Hayley.
Some club members have already kindly donated but if other members would like to contribute as well, donations can be made to the Club’s Charitable Trust through Warren Megget.  Donations are tax-deductible.
Hayley needs assistance at the beginning of February to pay a bond for accommodation in Wellington and also her substantial fees.
