Guest Speaker(s): Keven Mealamu
Wednesday 14th August
Guest Speaker(s): Louisa Wall
Friday 16th August
Papakura Leisure Centre
Guest Speaker(s): Yuliya Schamrel
With another week complete, the students had some great training sessions and also some inspiring speakers.
Fit60 started the week with a session run by ex-All black Keven Mealamu, it was a great start to the week, this was followed by Boxfit run by the trainers from Super city fitness and a circuit class ran at the Papakura leisure centre. The sessions this week saw a significant increase in intensity.
Louisa Wall the MP for Mangere shared her story with the students which was captivating and inspiring.
Yuliya Schamrel shared her journey from Russia to Africa to New Zealand and discussed a model of happiness, and discussed the IKIGAI people from Japan.
Unsung Heroes
It is common in many Rotary Clubs for the average Club Member to be totally unaware and oblivious of the efforts of others tolling behind the scenes on certain projects which often remain undercover but are vital to our club responsibilities.
Rotary struggles with both internal and external Public Relations (PR) and we need to keep this in mind with everything that we do or else the opportunity or the moment disappears and is lost in History.
Why are you a Rotarian?
Robert Higham
I was surprised when I was asked the same question over 11 years ago by a member shortly after being welcomed into the club (under President Lloyd Williams), adding, why hadn’t I joined Probus instead, hinting that our club needed younger people in it.

During my retirement, and after catching up with deferred maintenance around the house, it seemed that a way of giving a little back to the community would be best achieved with a service organisation. So, when asked to join Rotary, I felt this could be a good move. Some of my time was already taken up with other organisations, however I knew several Rotarians, the fellowship aspect appealed to me; this was a well-respected organisation, and by becoming a member would be a means of fulfilling these ambitions.
Ruby Seeto Tea towels
Ruby,  daughter of Rotary's District 9920 Past District Governor Ron Seeto and wife Sharon has presented at many clubs who have supported her fundraising efforts. We have also individually done so but our Directors have approved to now use these beautiful Tea Towels as gifts for Guest Speakers where applicable.
Wallace Cotton's collaboration with cancer survivor Ruby Seeto and her amazing tea towels continues to deliver outstanding results for Starship Children’s Hospital. Her recent Red Salad design has helped take the tally to more than $500,000 to date. An effort to be hugely proud of!
Committee Meetings this week
Just a reminder that there will be no speaker this week as we have committee Meetings. Please let your Director know if you are unable to make it.
Papakura Rotary Year 30 - 1977-1978
Eric Jerkovich was President in 1977 and it was fitting that in this year we had a double student exchange. Our outward bound student Kim Farmer was hosted by The Rotary Club of Sao Paulo Perdizes in Brazil and we hosted the very popular Cindy Kenoyer from The USA.
Times, they are a changing
“Lexophile” describes those that have a love for words, such as “you can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish”, or, “To write with a broken pencil is pointless.”
An annual competition is held by the New York Times to see who can create the best original lexophile. This year’s winning submissions are posted  below:
