Rotary Club of Papakura

9th February 2021, Issue 27

From the President's Desk
Greetings Fellow Rotarians
The TV News Presenter informed me tonight that it was now 1 year since the first case of Covid-19 was detected in New Zealand.
So much for those of us, that thought the whole thing would be over in a couple of months!
I am extremely proud of the way the Rotary Club of Papakura has handled the last 12 months. We have kept the club active and helped the community with a number of projects and situations.
Due to ‘you know what’ we will be running a zoom meeting this Thursday evening. John F will be sending out details soon.
My thanks to PE Sue for keeping things ticking over while I was away restocking the freezer with fish for the next 12 months.
I am very disappointed with the latest Level 3 lockdown. I had spent last Saturday playing some very good bowls in the qualifying rounds of the Club 4’s competition, and qualified, only to have the Post Section play on Sunday cancelled!!!.
I can tell you one thing – a ‘Boomer’ did not cause this latest lockdown.
Catch you online Thursday.
President Allan
Motorbike show February 6th and 7th
Great work from all the club members helping at the Bike Show. A very busy few days.
Active Traffic Control

Thank you

A special thanks to the team at Active Traffic Control who again at very short notice assisted by supplying 20 of their Road Cones for the recent Classic Motorcycle Festival that we also supported at Pukekohe. The traffic control at the gates is a big job for our club. As Warren Megget, the project organiser stated it would have been impossible without the cones.

Active also continue to supply cones for our Road Safety Days (RYDA) and will do so again for our Papakura High School Day on the 18th of February.
So a big thanks to Active Traffic Control for this support.
Cheers, George
Salvation Army Packing
This project is back on full stream again with a team of five volunteers from the Newmarket Club working alongside nine of our own hardy supporters from Papakura.
There was flour packing galore with the experienced packers of Sue, Jackie, Lyn, Dawn and the heavy lifting champion Ted Lees.  Warren and George packed shelves and removed the debris of cardboard and plastic from the work site trying to keep pace with the very efficient packing line led by Allan Haywood from Newmarket including the twin brothers of John and David Hawke, a team that packed some 210 boxes in three hours.
Peter Wilcock joined the packing line to give some Papakura horsepower to the Newmarket team on the packing line and Ted was everywhere helping wherever needed.
Congratulations to all, a big thank you it was a great effort from all present.
Our Papakura Packing day will continue to be a regular one on the 2nd Tuesday each month with a 10.00am start. This time seems to suit most of us so we have a short lunch stop with a hot drink supplied but please bring your own lunch if you need a snack.
Different clubs every Tuesday and anyone who cannot make our club's exclusive day is very welcome to attend on any of those days to carry out the packing. These days all start at 9.00am, which is hard to get to in the traffic from the south. The benefit that you can receive from attending on a non-Papakura day is that you meet some wonderful new Rotarian friends from all over the district.
Cheers George
Support for Hayley James
Club members will remember Hayley who was a scholarship recipient last year.  She had left a very difficult family situation and was living independently.  She spoke back in early December about her first year at University where she had been studying Law and Commerce.  She passed all her papers with excellent grades and gained entry to Law School.  However, she has decided that Law is not for her but will continue with Commerce.
Hayley is working over the summer holidays at a variety of low paid jobs in order to finance her University and accommodation costs, which will be considerable.
Both times after she has spoken, several club members have approached me suggesting that the club continues to support Hayley financially.  I am recommending to Directors that we continue to give some support to Hayley.
Some club members have already kindly donated but if other members would like to contribute as well, donations can be made to the Club’s Charitable Trust through Warren Megget.  Donations are tax-deductible.
Hayley needs assistance at the beginning of February to pay a bond for accommodation in Wellington and also her substantial fees.
