Rotary Club of Papakura
2019-2020

14 October 2019| Issue 15

What a great day for a Bike Ride!

Sunday was an early-ish start with the Alarm going off at 7am. A quick breakfast and then loading up the car, Rotary's Counties Cycle Classic on the agenda for the day.

A quick and easy 52km around the Pukekohe/Waiuku country side. The 565m of climbing a detail forgotten about in the excitement. However the sun was out and the wind minor - good start!

Why am I a Rotarian?
Murray Guy

I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Papakura in 1971 and in those days of restricted membership to one person per occupation  and it was a real privilege.
Rotary offered me  an opportunity to meet at that time, men of varying occupations who met weekly for a fellowship meal and provided a way for me to serve the local community. At that time the club had a number of enthusiastic young members with young families and the club's social calendar provided activities such as picnics, pool parties, Christmas activities including Father Christmas encouraging a real family occasion.

Business in this day and generation being undertaken on the "weekend" has almost destroyed  a great number of these activities including the Saturday morning working bees which provided great opportunities of mixing together for the good of the local community.

Rotary offers the individual the opportunity to serve , the community, to build goodwill and make lasting friendships.

In short :     ' SERVICE above SELF'

Kokako Lodge Working Bee 19-20 October

Further to my one minute at Rotary I am advising that about 12 RYLA Alumni and Rotoractors are intending to participate in a bit of a post winter cleanup at our Kokako Lodge Camp  at Hunua Falls and as you all know our Club has been allocated the responsibility to be the Rotary Club oversee to its wellbeing.

Both Warren Megget and Tim Wilcock are Trustees and doing a great job and now its our turn to be involved in supporting this team of young leaders to participate with them with a bit of elbow grease and perhaps some snips etc, and in general enjoy the opportunity of working alongside our future Rotarians .
The list of jobs we are hoping to achieve is below. Please let me know if you can help by Tuesday night the 15th October as we will need numbers for catering for a cup of tea etc.

Cheers
George
