This week, Rotary Papakura was privileged to host a truly inspiring and deeply moving presentation from Nikki De La Rosa, an ex-RYLArian and a passionate advocate from the Well Women Trust. Nikki shared the incredible, life-saving work of the Trust and brought to light their urgent need for support to continue their vital services.

The Well Women Trust is a beacon of hope for women and their whānau across Auckland and Waikato, in particular Franklin and Papakura, who are navigating the challenging waters of antenatal or postnatal distress. Their holistic approach focuses on wellness and resilience, providing crucial support during what can be one of the most vulnerable periods in a person's life.
As Nikki explained, the Trust's origins are rooted in a tragic community need—a response to post-natal depression and the heartbreaking loss of new mothers to suicide. The statistics are sobering: one in seven women suffer from post-natal depression. Yet, since the Well Women Trust began its work, not a single life has been lost among those who have utilized their services. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the effectiveness and dedication of their team.
The Trust began 18 years ago as a simple coffee group, a safe space for women who had experienced the loss of a child or were grappling with post-natal depression. From these humble beginnings, it has grown into an essential service, providing a lifeline to countless families.
Despite the critical nature of their work and their proven track record, the Well Women Trust receives no government funding. This leaves them in a precarious position, with an urgent need for financial support to keep their doors open and continue their life-saving mission.
We were sorry to hear that Lead Facilitator Jane Fausett and Chair Judith Couch were unable to attend, as they were unexpectedly delayed in Wellington. However, Nikki's presentation was a powerful and clear call to action, reminding us all of the importance of community support for maternal mental health.
We encourage all Rotarians and friends of Rotary to learn more about the Well Women Trust and consider how you might be able to help. Please visit their website at https://www.wellwomen.org.nz/ to find out more about their incredible work and the ways you can contribute to this invaluable cause.
