On Saturday, April 26th, the community of Drury gathered under a bright, cool autumn sky to honor the fallen. The spirit of remembrance remained unshaken, and drew a crowd of over 300 people to the local memorial.

The service, was led by Riet van der Gulik, with a special focus this year on the veterans of the Vietnam War. The solemn ceremony saw a wonderful turnout of local dignitaries, including Judith Collins, local councillors, and Local Board representatives, alongside students from local schools who came to pay their respects.

Fellowship in Action:

Once the formalities concluded, the focus shifted from solemn reflection to community fellowship. The Rotary Club of Drury, with the assistance of Papakura Rotarians, fired up the grills to provide a sausage sizzle for the attendees.

It was a true "all hands on deck" effort. Notably, our newest Papakura member, Peter Dodd, wielding the tongs, guided by the seasoned expertise of George Wilson and the Drury team, proved that the Rotary spirit of "Service Above Self" is alive and well in our new recruits.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Community Resilience: Despite the heavy construction and roadworks surrounding Drury, the turnout was a testament to the strength of the local community.
  • The Power of Partnership: The collaboration between the Drury and Papakura clubs ensured that over 300 hungry attendees were fed quickly and with a smile.

It was a beautiful day of remembrance and a fantastic display of how Rotary continues to be the glue that holds our communities together, even in times of change.

"A great community day and a nice celebration in a very disruptive Drury." — George Wilson
