Papakura Rotary has recently lost some prominent members of our community.  We have recently bid farewell to several prominent members of our community, including two men who were deeply woven into the history of our club: Past President Noel Morrison and  club member Graham Payne.

Their passing, along with other recent losses, serve as a poignant reminder of the bonds we share. Graham Payne, in particular, was a lifelong mate of George Wilson and a familiar face to many of us. Noel and Graham were men of action, service, and enduring friendship.

In times like these, it is easy to feel the weight of the years. However, fellow member Graham Viall recently shared a sentiment that perfectly captures the Rotary spirit of resilience. While we honor those we have lost, we must also look at the "grunt" we have left in our own tanks.

Don’t Let the Old Man In

Graham shared a story—and an accompanying video—inspired by an exchange between country singer Toby Keith and the legendary Clint Eastwood. When Keith asked the then-88-year-old Eastwood how he kept up such a prolific pace, Eastwood simply replied:

"I get up every day and don’t let the old man in."

This isn't about ignoring age; it’s about refusing to let a "number" dictate our passion, our service, or our zest for life. Whether we are planning our next community project or simply sharing a coffee and a laugh at a weekly meeting, the goal remains the same: Stay active, stay engaged, and stay young at heart.

As we remember Noel and Graham, let’s honor them not just with a moment of silence, but by continuing the work they loved with renewed energy. There is plenty of work to be done, and as the song reminds us, we’ve got plenty of "grunt" left in us yet.
