Rotary Club of Papakura: A Glimpse into the Future of Science

On April 9th, the Rotary Club of Papakura was treated to an inspiring presentation by our 2026 Science Forum candidates, Jeremy (ACG Strathallan) and Samantha (Papakura High School). The pair shared their whirlwind experience at the forum, where they traded their school holidays for a deep dive into the world of high-level technology and research.

A Journey of Discovery

The forum’s schedule was packed with "modules" that pushed the students beyond the standard classroom curriculum. From Coding and Engineering to Biology and Chemistry, the candidates were immersed in hands-on learning.

  • Physics & Chemistry: The students described creating a "rainbow of colours" during their lab work, a visual highlight of their scientific exploration.
  • Engineering & Robotics: They engaged in practical engineering challenges, including building and coding robots to perform specific tasks.
  • Additive Manufacturing: A standout visit to the Additive Manufacturing Lab showcased the cutting edge of 3D printing, including intricate designs like 3D-printed guitars.

Personal Highlights

While both students attended the same forum, their favorite "Tech Visits" reflected their unique interests:

  • Samantha was particularly fascinated by the Forensic Sciences visit, where she learned how biology and chemistry are applied to solve real-world mysteries.
  • Jeremy found his passion in the Living Lab, exploring how technology integrates with biological systems.

More Than Just Science

It wasn't all lab coats and safety goggles. The forum provided a vibrant social atmosphere, including Volleyball tournaments and a "Gender-Swap" themed disco. The experience culminated in a prestigious Formal Dinner, a sharp contrast to the casual lab sessions earlier in the week.

A Family Affair

The evening was made even more special by the presence of the community that supports these bright young minds. We were delighted to welcome Jeremy’s parents, siblings, and grandparents, who joined us to celebrate his achievements and hear firsthand about his journey.

The Rotary Club of Papakura is proud to sponsor such dedicated students. Jeremy and Samantha’s experiences remind us of the importance of fostering curiosity and providing our local youth with the tools to lead the next generation of scientific innovation.
