Our Rotary Papakura family was out in full force last Friday to witness a truly historic and deeply moving occasion: a Special Presentation Ceremony at the Papakura Marae honouring Bruce and Jessie Pulman for over 50 years of distinguished service to our community.
The ceremony was a magnificent showcase of Māori culture at its very best. Masterfully MC’d by Jean Waters under the watchful eye of Papakura Marae leader Tony Kake, the afternoon culminated in a rare and prestigious honour—the presentation of the Korowai O Ranginui (Cloak) to Bruce.
"Adorn the Bird with Feathers So It May Fly"
The Korowai is adorned with profound symbolic meanings that perfectly reflect Bruce's extraordinary life and attributes. According to the Whakataukī (proverb) featured on the cloak, "Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu"—Adorn the bird with feathers so it may fly. For decades, Bruce has been providing those very "feathers" to the Papakura community, building world-class platforms to help our youth and local sportspeople soar.
The intricate elements of the Korowai tell the story of a journey founded on Diversity, Excellence, and Appeal:
The Waka (The Journey): Represents Bruce Pulman Park and a journey built on Kotahitanga (Togetherness), Kia Kaha (Staying Strong), and Mana Rangatira (A Chief's purposeful leadership and endeavour).
Tinana (The Body): Uses yellow and black to symbolise the bee—a thriving hive of activity, industry, and community engagement.
The Hoe (Paddles): Positioned upright as a mark of respect and acknowledgement for HEB Construction and Bruce himself.
Matariki & Pou: Represent stars guiding the waka into the future, and the pillars of Pungao (Energy), Ngākau (Heart), and Wairua (Spirit).
A Visionary Partnered with Endless Drive
Our very own George Wilson, who had the privilege of speaking on behalf of Rotary at the event, captured the room's sentiment beautifully. While keeping things light-hearted regarding his own Te Reo Māori skills, George acknowledged the immense depth of respect the Marae was conferring upon Bruce and Jessie.
"Working with a visionary like Bruce was both exciting and at times frightening," George shared, reflecting on his time as a Foundation Trustee for the Bruce Pulman Park Trust. "His passion for excellence has no boundaries, and his energy is endless."
George highlighted that Bruce truly epitomises the core Rotary cornerstone: Service Above Self. This lifetime of dedication is why Bruce has been awarded the prestigious Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship on two occasions, alongside his QSO and QSM Queen’s Birthday Honours for community service.
A Living Legacy
From transforming a swamp into the world-class, 54-hectare Bruce Pulman Park —ensuring local kids don't have to battle the Auckland motorway just to train and learn —to redeveloping the Nina Busing Kindergarten and building the international all-weather track at Massey Park in a roaring six months , Bruce’s "let's do it" attitude has achieved what others thought was impossible.
Yet, as George beautifully noted, Bruce remains forever humble in his self-interests. His humanity, benevolence, and incredible feat of self-belief have left an indelible mark on Papakura.
